FAQ’s about OCD Therapy with me

I treat OCD with a combination of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ERP involves gradually exposing you to the sources of your obsessions while you work on not engaging in the compulsions resulting from those obsessive thoughts. This helps to reduce your anxiety over time and also help you to not act based your thoughts.

ERP is a challenging type of therapy because it requires leaning into the uncomfortable feelings instead of avoiding them or trying to make them go away with the compulsions. That being said, ERP is considered the “gold standard” for treating OCD, because it has been proven by lots of research to be effective. I’ve seen it help set many clients free from feeling stuck in their obsessions and compulsions and feeling powerless to their OCD cycles. I will challenge you to get uncomfortable for the sake of growth and healing, but I will never force you to move faster through the process than you want to.

ACT complements ERP by teaching you to accept intrusive thoughts without over-identifying with them (e.g. believing they must be true or meaningful) and without acting on the thoughts. Fostering this kind of psychological flexibility will help you focus on what truly matters in your life, even if the OCD obsessive thoughts never go away completely.

Some people’s OCD will go into remission and not bother them anymore. However, I don’t think that’s the norm. The good news is that in my experience, people who go through treatment find that their OCD cycles are less frequent and less intense, and that they no longer feel enslaved by whatever OCD symptoms they might still experience.

Treatment can take as little as a few months but sometimes it takes longer, depending on the severity of your OCD. It also depends on if there are coexisting mental health conditions that need treatment, such as depression, general anxiety, trauma, an eating disorder, etc.

The first meeting, the assessment session, costs $175. Regular sessions after that are $155. Sessions are about 50-minutes each. I do not accept insurance but can provide a superbill for you to submit to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, if that’s your plan offers that.

I have worked with kids and teens in the past, but now I focus my practice exclusively on adults. If you’re looking for support for someone under 18 years old, please still reach out, and I will try to connect you with a trusted colleague who works with that age! Contact me here.
